Solar-screen shades control heat and glare

Solar-screen roller shades are the default product for commercial glazing in Texas and Oklahoma. The fabric's openness factor — typically 1%, 3%, 5% or 10% — determines how much view is preserved and how much solar heat gain and glare is rejected. Architects select it deliberately for orientation and glazing performance, so substituting a visually similar fabric with a different openness is not a neutral change. We install what is specified, and if a substitution is proposed we put it in writing for the design team.

Beyond fabric, the details that matter on a shade package are hembar type, roll direction (fabric to the glass or away), fascia versus pocket versus exposed roller, and the coupling of linked shades across wide openings. Get those wrong and the shades still function but look wrong across a floor plate — which is exactly what an owner notices on a walkthrough.

Blackout and dual-shade assemblies

Blackout roller shades are standard in hotel guestrooms, student housing, patient rooms, imaging suites, auditoriums and training rooms. Real blackout performance depends on side channels, light gaps and pocket closure, not just the fabric. A blackout shade with a two-inch light gap on each side does not meet a hotel brand standard, so we install the specified light-blocking details rather than treating them as optional.

Dual-shade assemblies pair a solar screen with a blackout shade on a single bracket set, giving daytime glare control and nighttime privacy. They are increasingly common in hospitality and multifamily. Dual brackets add depth requirements that need to be coordinated against the pocket or head condition early — another reason we field-verify before fabrication when we can.

Installed at construction scale

Whether a job has forty shades or four thousand, the process is the same: take off from plans, submit under Division 12 24 00, verify openings, install by floor or by building on the superintendent's sequence, and complete the punch. Our crews handle pocket-mounted, recessed, ceiling-mounted and surface-mounted conditions, and they work above finished floors without damaging them.
